Our Packard Paint Guide to Custom Flooring Projects

New flooring changes more than the appearance of a home. Floors affect how your space sounds, how easy it is to clean, and how well it stands up to daily life. At Packard Paint Decorating Centers, we’ve helped homeowners make practical decisions alongside their design choices.

Whether you’re renovating worn floors or choosing materials for a new home, start by thinking about how you’ll use each room. After all, a flooring style that works in a quiet bedroom may not last long inside a busy kitchen or mudroom.

Plan Your Home Flooring Projects Room-by-Room

Our team rarely recommends choosing a single type of custom flooring for an entire home. We often advise against this because, for example, an entryway and a bedroom don’t take the same beating. Kitchens need to withstand spills and regular mopping, while bathrooms need a material that won’t be damaged by excessive moisture and even heat.

Additionally, for homes with pets and children, several types of flooring are available that look visually stunning even under heavy wear and tear.

What Types of Flooring Are Available at Packard Paint Decorating Centers?

Flooring is much easier to compare when the samples are in front of you. At Packard Paint Decorating Centers, you can explore our collection of top brands, including Shaw, Mohawk, Fusion, and Premier, and see how their hardwood, carpet, laminate, and luxury vinyl products differ.

Be sure to bring us room measurements, a few inspiration photos, and an idea of your budget. We can usually rule out the wrong materials quickly and spend more time on the options that better fit your project.

Hardwood and Engineered Hardwood Flooring

Set oak, maple, cherry, and bamboo wood flooring samples next to one another, and the differences become much easier to see:

  • Oak has a noticeable grain and the strength for regular household use.

  • Maple is finer and more uniform.

  • Cherry begins with a warm color that becomes richer as it ages.

  • Bamboo has a distinct grain and texture, and it comes from a rapidly renewable plant.

However, it’s good to know that solid hardwood isn’t the best choice for every room, particularly where damp conditions are common.

For a basement or bathroom, Mohawk engineered hardwood offers a real-wood surface over a layered core that remains more stable as moisture levels change. It delivers the character of wood in spaces where solid boards may be a riskier choice.

Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) and Tile (LVT)

We often love recommending Fusion luxury vinyl to homeowners who need flooring for a kitchen, bathroom, basement, or mudroom. The plank format gives the room a wood look, while the tile styles draw from stone and ceramic.

Waterproof construction makes everyday cleanup more forgiving when wet shoes, spills, or splashes are bound to happen.

Shaw also offers luxury vinyl that resembles natural materials while providing added water resistance, offering an easier care routine than many of the surfaces it imitates.

Carpeting

In a bedroom or upstairs family room, carpet reduces the sound of footsteps or other household noises and makes the floor more comfortable for bare feet. Shaw’s selection ranges from smooth, understated styles to heavier textures, with enough color choices to work around existing paint and furniture.

Then there’s Mohawk SmartStrand, which is made with stain resistance built into the fiber, an advantage when the room is used by children, pets, or a steady stream of visitors.

Laminate Flooring

Premier laminate has a wood look, but it’s designed for the routine traffic of hallways and living spaces and doesn’t call for the same care as natural wood.

For many projects, that balance of appearance and day-to-day maintenance is the deciding factor.
